Sewn Boards Binding

A Sewn and glued soft cover notebook

The modern Sewn Boards binding is credited to Gary Frost. It is an elegant structure that has an additional section of card or heavier paper sewn onto the text block that is incorporated into the cover of the book. It lays flat, opens beautifully, and allows for endless design variation.

Squareback Case Binding

A Sewn book block glued into a hard cover

A Casebound book has a hard cover and spine to protect the bookblock pages. The squareback book has a square spine in contrast to a rounded spine. This book has a Bradel binding in which cover boards and spine are joined together with a strip of paper before covering. This allows the covers to be fit precisely to the bookblock before gluing and pressing.

Drum Leaf Book

An adhesive only structure

A drum leaf book is an adhesive structure, rather than a sewn one, and makes minimal use of adhesive while still providing a sturdy structure. The original drum leaf structure was developed by Tim Ely in 2004 and you can find more simplified instructions about how it’s made in Making Handmade Books by Alisa Golden.

Japanese Stab Binding

A non-adhesive binding

Stab binding books are joined through the text block edge rather than along a spine. Stitches can vary and covers were traditionally flexible. It’s a very popular workshop topic with Bindfulness.

Post and Screw Album

A non-adhesive binding

The Post and Screw album is ideal for scrapbooking or mounting photographs, drawing and ephemera. Pages are folded on the spine edge to create a guard, or spacer. This increased thickness at the spine edge allows for expansion of the body of the book when additional paper thickness is added to the pages. Pages and covers and secured with a set of posts, which are available in varying lengths.
