Description

Saturday 21 August 2021 2pm – 5/5:30pm

We’ll meet at Monkshill Refectory, a wonderful converted barn with views out to sea across the Swale estuary, close to Whitstable and Canterbury with peacocks roaming the farm buildings and kitchen garden.

This structure is a Bindfulness favourite. The modern Sewn Boards Binding, a sewn and glued soft cover book, is credited to Gary Frost. It is an elegant structure that has an additional section of card or heavier paper sewn onto the text block that is incorporated into the cover of the book. It lays flat, opens beautifully, and allows for endless design variation. The finished book, with its modern lines and flush covers, feels wonderful in the hand.

You will learn (or revisit) beginning bookbinding techniques.  We will look at the importance of paper grain and how to fold, sew, and cover your book. All materials will be provided for your afternoon of making, including paper, card, various decorative papers, linen thread and adhesive to make your own uniquely designed books. Tools are provided for use on the day.

Coffee, tea and biscuits are included.

You’ll take away your unique handbound book, new skills, and the satisfaction and well-being that the investment of time into working creatively brings.

In the workshop you will learn about:

The selection of materials
Paper grain
Sewing techniques
Cover preparation
Some common bookbinding tools and how to use them safely

Classes are taught through practical demonstrations and supported hands on work. Image is to demonstrate the style of book only. Papers and materials will vary.

Monkshill Refectory is a well ventilated venue with capacity for 20 socially distanced people, with up to 60 when restrictions are no longer required. Bindfulness workshops are limited to 8 places.
